Why Do You Need a Website?…

Why Do You Need a Website?…

Written by Ron Barber on 07/21/2010 and updated 07/21/2010.

Your Website:

A website will announce your presence. The reason that you wish to be known may be one of several. If you have a business, then a website is a necessity. So, your website is likely to be announcing one of the following:

  • A business.
  • The website itself.
  • A charity.
  • A club or group.
  • Something else.

Next we have a few questions:

  • Does your site deal with memberships?
  • Does your site deal with donations?
  • Does your site sell products or services?
  • Do you wish to monetize your site?
  • Do you wish to have paid ads on your site?

Promoting for Your Website (Marketing):

I almost all cases you will wish to promote or market your website and the business or group behind it. This marketing can be informal or a Formal Marketing Campaign. You can spend only time or a great of money on your marketing campaign. Your business or group will need to set an appropriate budget. I will discuss the lower costing options.

In order to sell anything on-line, you would need a website with traffic. In order to get paid for ads, you need a website with traffic.  Notice the key words website and traffic.  The website is easy and very low cost and only a small amount of work. Once your site is up then you will need to promote it to increase your traffic. This is the most difficult and time consuming part of the whole process. It requires work, more work, and more work.

Of course, some products sell themselves. If the products you’re selling are made by you and 100% unique, then promoting is easier. If the products made by someone else then there may be many people selling and promoting them. You must find a way to separate you from the rest.

Spread the word. Use everything that you can think of to spread the word about your website and your products. Here is a list of methods:

  • The Website – include the address in all your communication.
  • Mail – send out periodic mailings.
  • Signs (or flyers) –
  • Newspaper Ads –
  • Google Ads –
  • Radio Ads –
  • TV Ads –
  • Write a blog – maybe as part of your website.
  • Social Networking on sites like: Twitter, Facebook, Google Buzz.
  • Write articles on sites like: Hubpages, Squidoo, Infobarrell, Ehow, Howtodothings.
  • Make entries into bookmark sites like: StumbleUpon, Shetoldme, Xomba, redgage, Snipsly.
  • Make comments on other blogs and articles on these subjects.
  • Spread the word. You need to create as many backlinks to your site and products as you can. See my document on Website Traffic and Promotion.

Social Networks:

Another great way to promote your website and your products is thru social networks. Social networks are on-line places like Twitter, Facebook, Google Buzz where people go to share information, experiences, and knowledge. I use Twitter.com and have several accounts in fact. I also use a Twitter tool assist me to be a good twitter citizen and grow my following – twMafia.com. I use Facebook.com and have a couple of accounts. See my document on Social Networking.

Dynamic Website Content:

Another important aspect of promoting your website is to have something new to say in your promotional documents and to have new content for the user to see. The following is a list of the type of things that can change in your promotional documents and on your website:

  • Sales
  • News
  • A Newsletter
  • Meeting Agendas and Minutes
  • New Information about your business or group

This is a list of nice things to have on your site that can change of be added to easily:

  • Photos
  • Stories
  • Awards
  • Community Activities
  • Personal Info of a fun nature about the people in the business or group
